My first time in Russia,

I stripped down inside a small sweat cave and let a Siberian mountain man beat me with birch leaves. “Russian tradition,” he explained over a glass of Kalashnikov vodka beforehand.

And that was how I was introduced to my father-in-law. 

I relate this story not to tell you about my exploits in the eastern bloc (well, not just that), but because this episode illustrates who I am, as both a person and a writer. 

I don’t run from a challenge. I run toward it, with cheerful abandon.
